Volunteers, both men and women, age 18 and older, will staff the site from 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Two men and two women will team up to cover the various responsibilities for each of the three shifts:

  • Shift I - 6:30 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. - Set up the PADS designated area of the church, including getting out the sleeping pads, linens, towels, and zip-bags of personal toiletries for the guests. Register guests as they arrive. Serve the evening meal and visit with guests. Lights out at 11:00 p.m.
  • Shift II - 10:45 p.m. - 3:00 a.m. - Guests will usually be sleeping. Pack the sack lunches and place them in the refrigerator for guests to take with them when they leave in the morning. Volunteers will be stationed to monitor the guests and building. (Quiet time will allow you to do your own quiet-time activities.)
  • Shift III - 2:45 a.m. - 7:30 a.m. - Wake up guests and serve a light breakfast (cereal, toast, juice, coffee, etc.). Assist guests in signing out, and give them their sack lunch. Clean up the PADS area: wipe down the pads and pillows, bag up the linens and towels, clean up the breakfast and kitchen areas. Send an e-mail report to the next site.
  • Volunteers to fill Shift II and Shift III are URGENTLY needed. Please prayerfully consider offering your time to those in need one day a month.

Other ways to volunteer for the PADS program:

  • Pray. Pray for guests that will be served as well as the volunteers serving them.
  • Provide part of the evening meal: main entree or casserole, side dish, dessert
  • Help serve and clean up the evening meal
  • Pack personal toiletries bags for guests at each site
  • Bring used linens to the Kendall County Jail and return clean linens to the shelter site.
  • Join the "fundraising team" to seek donations and organize special events for donations. Contact Julie Jeffries if you are interested in joining the team.
  • Join the Publicity Team to promote and educate others about PADS. Contact Director, Anne Engelhardt via e-mail who will forward your interest to the Publicity Committee.
